How does it work?

Description

4 week course

This class goes through the basics of robotics and programming by building an autonomous robot! It’s the perfect introduction into the world of engineering!

The robot is based on the Lego Mindstorm Education EV3. This is a program that teaches children how to learn the engineering process in an easy and fun way with a tool they use for play – LEGOS. The robot is built as per instructions and integrated with a Brick that connects to the tablet, laptop or desktop via USB cord to download programs into it.

Students program their robots with a set software from Lego Mindstorm Education EV3 and follow the sample code. They also have an opportunity to make it their own by adding sensors, motors and test different ideas with balance and sounds. This allows our students to go from basic learner to finally programming and implementing their own creativity.

Features of the Robot Kit:

The Lego Mindstorm Education EV3 Core Set is a STEM solution that allows students to design, build and program their own creations while helping them to develop essential skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

The system includes the EV3 Intelligent Brick, a compact and powerful programmable computer that makes it possible to control motors and collect sensor feedback using the intuitive icon-based programming and data logging software that is delivered with the set or you can download online from Lego Education website.

Please review the materials list below for ordering the supplies needed for this course prior to starting the course.

This class is intended for beginners Ages 10 – 12. The only prerequisite is the ability to follow instructions and experience building Legos. A webcam is required for participation for live hands on help. An adult present or available during class is not required but recommended in case the student needs some extra help.

This is an introduction and the goal is to understand the basics of  the engineering design process and learn some programming. This class centers around getting a working robot. At the end of the week the student will learn engineering design and know how to build a robot with LEGOS. Additional classes are available to dive into more programming tasks. This course is more focused on the design and build part of the engineering education.

Class Schedule:

4 week course

Class 1: Introduction to the Lego Mindstorm EV3 Kit and the parts of the Robot

Class 2: Configuring Blocks in Programming Lego EV3 Software

Class 3: Straight Move Programming

Class 4: Curved Move Programming

This is a hands on class intended for those who can stay focused on the project and are capable to perform basic steps required.  Parents need to be available if the child is having technical difficulties or is confused with the building instructions.

Teacher Expertise

Industrial and Systems Engineer turned Robotics Teacher and FLL Competitions Coach

I have been involved teaching Robotics and going to Robotics competitions with First Lego League Organization for about 4 years. I started my career in Engineering as a Sales Engineer and then went into Systems Improvement as a web architect designing websites and working with computer programmers to develop software products. I continue to work in Engineering, by I also dedicate time to the future of education. My focus now has been to make science and math education fun. With my education and teaching experience on Montessori, I find Legos the perfect tool to bring creativity to STEM programs.
